The error message, "Printer settings could not be saved. This operation is not supported." displays after attempting to change a driver on a Windows Server 2012 R2 print server.

When attempting to change the driver associated with a particular printer, you receive the following error: "Printer settings could not be saved. This operation is not supported." This error occurs because the printer is shared.

Simply unshare the printer and you will be able to change the printer driver. To unshare the printer:
  1. 1) Click the Settings > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Print Management shortcut.
  2. 2) Right-click on the printer and then click Properties.
  3. 3) Click on the Sharing tab and uncheck the Share this printer box.
  4. 4) Click Apply.
  5. 5) Change the driver.
  6. 6) Re-share the printer.
